Jasmin Patel is the Chief Operating Officer for the Indian pharma business of leading MNC Novartis. In his current role Dr. Patel is responsible for the set up and development of a new pharma business in India and which is expected to be the Launch Engine for select novel products from the Novartis pipeline. Prior to assuming these responsibilities Patel was the Head of Disease Area Strategy and M&A Assessments for 2 years at Novartis global headquarters in Basel.

Through these global responsibilities he was instrumental in fostering the alignment of Novartis Research, Development and Commercial strategies across all 8 of their strategic BUs and BFs. In addition, he led the strategic assessment of several M&A opportunities and potential deals with big pharma and biotechs.

From 2000-2003, Patel held positions of increasing responsibility with the leading management consultancy McKinsey & Company in New Jersey. His clients were exclusively the world’s leading players in the pharmaceutical, biotech and healthcare industries and whom he advised in diverse areas that included R&D strategy, new product commercialization, market entry strategy, business development, marketing strategy, organizational design, and post-merger integration.

Prior to these managerial experiences, Patel was a scientist in the Pharma and biotech industries. For 6 years in the 1990’s with Chugai Biopharmaceuticals in San Diego he led multiple initiatives that included the set up of a new Therapeutics venture focused on gene-based therapy, leading a multicultural group of 6 scientists, discovery and clinical development of a novel antisense agent for the treatment of AIDS, and pioneering new technologies/applications of high throughput drug discovery.

He has a B.Pharm degree with honors from Bombay University, a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from Duquesne University in the U.S., and an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He also spent 2 years training as PPG Post-doctoral Fellow at the world renowned Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California in the early 90’s.

His scientific accomplishments include: 8 US and PCT patents; 20 published papers, reviews, articles and abstracts; and 25+ presentations at international congresses including the Gordon Research Conferences. Patel has served in leadership roles in organizations like the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, The Scripps Society of Fellows, on professional boards that include the San Diego Pharmaceutical Forum, American Chemical Society, and as reviewer for journals such as Pharmaceutical Research and Current Drugs.
