EnWave Corporation has announced the completion of tests using its powderREV technology in the dehydration of cultures and probiotics from Danisco BioActives.

The tests were conducted as the first phase of an agreement between the companies. The objective is to create a dehydration method of delivering high-speed continuous bulk powder processing, capable of handling sensitive biological materials, such as cultures.

The technology is a Radiant Energy Vacuum (REV) process designed to convert a liquid stream of biological materials into bulk powder on a continuous basis. Preliminary tests on cultures were conducted using the single-vial REV prototype. Post-dehydration bioactivity levels from the dehydration methods show that the dried cultures are capable of achieving equivalent, or possibly better bioactivity for certain cultures than freeze-dried samples.

The companies will undertake the second phase of the agreement to evaluate the commercial viability of the dehydration technology on a wider scope. This second phase is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2010.
