Jilin, China-based Natural Pharmatech has entered an agreement with Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd., Osaka, Japan, in a move to introduce its line of botanical R&D services to the global scene.

In addition, the company has plans to penetrate the US market with its line of botanical drugs. It will introduce its range of dietary supplements later this year.

Under the terms of the agreement, Natural Pharmatech will provide pre-clinical pharmacology and toxicology testing services for Kobayashi's botanical drug development at a competitive cost.

A botanical drug's active ingredient is extracted from an herb as compared to a chemical-based drug that is chemically formulated.

Botanical drugs have huge market potential in China, accounting for about one quarter of total drug sales alone. The market is also beginning to take fl ight since the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) introduced a guidance for development of these drugs recently.

Besides, botanical drugs are fast gaining popularity among consumers as these drugs are capable to treat chronic illnesses. Zhuojun Li, investor relations of Global Pharmatech added, "Botanical drugs have enormous potential in today's drug market. Because they are natural, they have many advantages, including fewer side effects." PA
