UK-based Synexus Clinical Research has teamed up with the subsidiary of the Indian Clinical Research Institute, ICRI Research Limited (IRL) to establish the first patient-recruitment site management organization (SMO) in India.

A chain of fully-owned good clinical practice (GCP)-compliant clinical research centers will be opened across India, the first of which is already established in Mumbai. Patients will be recruited according to internationally accepted methods. The first patient is due to be recruited to a trial in the first quarter of 2006.

An ideal location for clinical outsourcing, India is chosen due to cost efficiency and the availability of a large pool of candidates to undergo clinical trials.

Currently, India's clinical research industry is valued at US$100 million and is doubling almost each year.
